The Boren Awards provide financial support for up to #20,000 for a semester or quarter abroad, and up to #30,000 for a full year of international study. Funds can be used for tuition, room and board, health insurance, airfare, books, and other related expenses.

  4. The DAAD Scholarship Program

  5. The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

The program is open to Nigeria. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university. Applicants must be applying to or accepted into an eligible study abroad program or internship and must demonstrate financial need. 

The scholarship awards are designed to support students during their semester, academic year, or summer study abroad program. 

In addition to providing financial support, the Gilman Scholarship Program also provides support and resources for students throughout the study abroad process, including pre-departure orientations and re-entry workshops. 

Applicants must complete an online application form and submit two essays, one about their study abroad program and one on how they plan to use their experience to give back to their community upon returning home. 

Selected recipients will receive up to #5,000 towards their study abroad costs. Applications are usually due in March of each year and winners are notified by June. It is important to note that this program only applies to Nigeria. 

Citizens studying abroad, there are other options available for Nigerian Students as well. For example, the African Union offers various scholarships each year in fields such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) through its Pan-African Awards Programme. 

Additionally, Nigeria’s Ministry of Education also offers various scholarships each year which can be used to cover tuition costs as well as travel expenses when studying abroad.
